For as long as I can remember, Jessica has had a grand vision of retail sales on the farm but for many reasons, our small, on-farm retail store has remained fairly unchanged for the last few years. Each year, we would ask ourselves how it would be possible to get back to a retail shop that would cut cheese to order as we did when Sweet Grass Dairy first opened its doors in 2000. We wanted to grow to be able to offer a more diverse variety of products, but it just never happened. A corner lot about ½ mile from Sweet Grass Dairy was listed for sale about two years ago that would have been the perfect location for Jessica’s dream retail market. It was close to the farm, but we would have much more exposure from the daily highway traffic. Sadly, it was priced well out of our budget so when it was finally purchased, we both figured that our dream of selling cheese at that location was over.

Or was it?   Two months ago, we found out that retail spaces would be available at this same location.  I don’t know if I have ever seen our staff so excited.  I still have yet to figure out whether people were actually excited about a new retail shop, or the fact that we could finally spread offices out to where people had their own space.  And so it began.

Today, December 4th, 2008,   Sweet Grass Dairy Marketplace opened its doors and Jessica’s dream of a grand retail market came to fruition.  It’s a testament to the culinary journey that Jessica and I have been on since we met nearly ten years ago. We have had many great culinary adventures and met a lot of amazing people.  The Marketplace is a small sampling of some of our favorites and also some recent discoveries. Great products made by great people around not only our country but from all over the world are featured alongside our award winning cheeses.   Cheeses are cut to order, cured meats are sliced by hand.  Stop by, we’d love to share our dream with you.
