Tours at Sweet Grass Dairy
Have you ever wondered how you milk a goat or why some goats have ears and others do not? Did you ever stop to think about where your locally made cheese is produced? If so, we invite you to come out to Sweet Grass Dairy to get a hands on learning experience to learn about our goat dairy and how your cheeses are produced.
We offer scheduled group tours of 15 people or more on either Thursdays, Fridays, or Saturdays from the end of February though November. If you have less than 15, the farm is open to the public for tours on the first and third Saturdays of the month starting 02/20/2010 at 9:00 am. On our guided tour, you will have the opportunity see the goats being milked in the parlor, learn about our farming techniques, pet and interact with our goats, see a slide show of the cheesemaking process and taste a variety of our handmade cheeses. The following is the dates for tours open to the public for 2010 2/20, 3/6, 3/20, 4/03, 4/17, 5/01, 5/15, 6/05, 6/19, 7/03, 7/17, 8/07, 8/21, 9/04, 9/18,
Tours promptly start at 9:00 am, and the cost is $5 per person over the age of 2. We encourage hands on participation in the milking parlor if anyone is interested in milking a goat. You will also have plenty of time to play with either the baby goats or yearlings in the field. Tours normally last about an hour and a half to two hours with a tasting of cheeses at our retail shop, the Sweet Grass Dairy Marketplace, which is located about 1/3 of a mile from the farm.
Due to sanitation restrictions and concerns, no one will be allowed in our cheese manufacturing area. We do have a picture presentation to show you the complete cheesemaking process and ample time to ask questions if you are interested. Please remember that we are a working farm and request that you do not wear open-toed or high heeled shoes as you need to watch for poop, mud, and uneven ground.
